intimate infinite, 2022

The night sky has long been a source of inspiration and imagination throughout human history. The far-reaching expanse of space is still filled with mystery, which many people mythologize, but few have the chance to physically explore.

Perceived by us in innumerable ways, the cosmos can present itself as light from luminous pulsing plasma floating in a void, mythological narratives, culturally specific myths, or perhaps a glimmering future for humanity and terrestrial life on other planets. These observations and speculations for our future within the universe raises questions about the ethical implications of space colonization, be it for tourism, extraterrestrial resource extraction for the economic gain of private corporations, or as a dream towards a science fiction-like utopia.

This exhibition proposes an alternative theory for the future development of the cosmos based on understanding the night sky through touch. Poetic assemblages consider our intimate corporal relationship to galactic bodies of infinitely large scales at incomprehensible distances, by combining newly imagined and pre-existing stars, galaxies, and constellations. Holding the stars close, at a hand-held scale, how can we protect and care for our shared cosmos and our future within it?
